Southwest Public Schools rang in the 2025–2026 school year with a vibrant Mardi Gras–themed convocation that blended celebration, culture, and a spotlight on exceptional achievement.
Superintendent Dr. Adams welcomed staff with an enthusiastic “Let the good times roll!”—drawing parallels between the unity and energy of Mardi Gras and the district’s shared mission to champion every student, every day. Using the colors of Mardi Gras as a symbol—purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for the transformative power of education—Dr. Adams highlighted the district’s many accomplishments from the past year.
Among the successes:
Fifth graders outperformed the state in math and science, earning a state distinction in science for the first time in district history.
A record number of middle school students enrolled in advanced math and science courses, including Algebra I and Biology.
Students across campuses earned the Seal of Biliteracy, demonstrating proficiency in multiple languages.
The College and Career Preparatory Academy celebrated its largest graduating class, with 92% of seniors meeting college and career readiness standards—far surpassing the state average.
Nearly half of seniors earned industry-based certifications and many graduated with college credit, saving both time and money.
Students with disabilities exceeded state graduation expectations with advanced diplomas. 100% of seniors applying to post-secondary institutions were accepted, collectively earning $2.1 million in scholarships.
The event also honored Leaders, Teachers, and Support Staff of the Year, recognized long-serving educators, and celebrated high-performing teachers receiving rewards through the Teacher Incentive Allotment program. Special guest Kim Bearden, cofounder and executive director of the Ron Clark Academy, inspired attendees with her message inspired by her book, Fight Song.
With music, confetti, and a festive “second line” exit, the convocation set a tone of purpose, passion, and celebration for the year ahead.
